Archy The Movie

Archy

Courtesy of ZunaSurf.com….I was too lazy to write something up myself. Been surfing too much.

If you missed the packed April screening of the Matt Archbold film, Archy The Movie, here’s another chance to catch it on the big screen at the San Francisco Frozen Film Festival this Friday.

ARCHY the MOVIE
the opening film of the San Francisco Frozen Film Festival

Friday, July 11, 2008
5:30pm Screening (running time: 83 mins)

at the Roxie Theater
3117 16th Street (at Valencia), San Francisco
Tickets: $10 | Get advanced tix here.

About the film:
When Matt Archbold started surfing back in 1979 at age 11, the world had no idea that it was about to witness one of the most explosive surfers to ever set foot on a surfboard. With a career spanning nearly 3 decades now, Archy is considered to be the most successful free surfer of all time and a pioneer in advancing the evolution of aerials and high performance surfing.

Directed by Bill Ballard and narrated by Henry Rollins of Black Flag fame, ARCHY documents the highs and lows of iconic San Clemente surfer Matt Archbold over the last 25 years of his career. He was the surfer who should have been the missing link between legends Tom Curren and Kelly Slater, but wasn’t. From dropping out of high school and turning pro, to becoming the poster child of surf clothing giant MCD, Archy’s young life was no dull moment. Infamous for tackling the massive Tubes at Off The Wall on tiny boards, donning numerous tattoos and living the surf rock star lifestyle, he paid the price for the limelight, grappling with drug and alcohol addictions that rival that of legends for the last 20 years. Still, he never quit the sport — he spent many of his hazy years on Hawaii’s North Shore, enjoying lasting fame in the surfing world that very rarely concerns career wins.

Enjoy compelling interviews, explosive surf action, timeless photos set to all-time soundtrack including The Clash, Social Distortion, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Devo, and more.

Founded in 2006, the San Francisco FROZEN FILM FESTIVAL shows yearly in July — the Dead of Summer, when San Francisco is at its most chill. Our mission is to bring independent filmmakers and musicians to the San Francisco Bay Area from around the globe!

The film kicks off the Frozen Film Festival tonight, followed by RFK Personal Quests for Truth, which probes the mysteries of Robert Kennedy’s assassination, as well as a shorts program that includes The Ghost in the Material, a doc about imprisoned artist William Noguera, who narrates the film by cell (heh) phone. ‘Out There’…in SF tonight!

Out There

Teton Gravity’s new film Out There is being screened at the Mezzanine tonight here in SF.   It was shot in hi-def and 16mm and features some of the top surfers out there from hellman Garrett Mcnamara to the young John John Florence.  The film aims to generate awareness for the environment as seen through the eyes of surfers in locations such as the Galapagos, Chile, Hawaii, Tahiti, Mexico, as well as here in California.

I’m going to try and check it out as I missed the Saves the Waves benefit last week at the Minna and the recent screenings at the Potrero Sports Basements for some good films like Quest for Fear.

TGR does some really nice work and was able to capture some really unique angles in Tahiti.  I’m convinced this will be a new addition to my collection.

Check out the trailer here.

Jay Race

Jay Race

The 2008 Surftech Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race

On June 21st, 2008, Surftech will hold their annual Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race presented by QuikSilverEdition. Held in Santa Cruz, Ca. the race course offers prone and standup paddlers alike a rigorous 12 mile paddle straight into the heart of the Monterey Bay. In conjunction with the men’s event, ROXY returns to present the Roxy Women’s Paddleboard Challenge held simultaneously on the same 12 mile course. Known locally as “the Jay Race”, what started as a core local tribute to one of Santa Cruz’s most legendary watermen has become an internationally recognized event that draws top prone paddlers and standup paddlers from areas as far away as Florida, Hawaii & Australia. Requiring a combination of paddle skill and ocean knowledge, Santa Cruz’s notorious open ocean offers an exhilarating course that for the previous 4 years has been dominated by legendary paddler Gary Fortune of Southern California. While Gary will return to defend his title, this year’s event is expected to draw the largest turnout ever, with an array of world class competitors looking to take away his title. In anticipation of the turnout, the 2008 Jay Race is offering a prize purse for top prone paddle finishers in both the men’s and women’s event. Additionally The 2 top Overall men’s & women’s finishers and the top 2 men’s & women’s finishers from Northern California will earn free entries into the QuikSilverEdition Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race to be held in Hawaii on July 27th

For the recreational paddler, there is a lot more to the event than just the full course, The Jay race is known as a great event for paddlers of all levels and ages. In addition to the 12 mile course, for 2008 there are different short courses set up for recreational paddlers, broken up in a range of age groups. From ¼ mile sprints for kids to respectable 2 mile paddles for adults, The Jay Race offers a great opportunity to celebrate a shared appreciation for paddling at all levels.

It’s on at Mavericks!!

MavSurfer.com courtesy of Frank Quirarte

The Maverick’s Surf Contest is on this Saturday January 12th after a much anticipated wait having missed the window last year with no significant storms to speak of. This year has had some really good warm up sessions from Mavericks and Ghost Tree to Cortes Bank and Todos. Great weather is forecasted. It will be broadcast live online as well as at AT&T ball park on the jumbo trons.

Taken from the MavSurfer site:

“We cannot stress it enough, don’t try to come watch the event. You won’t be able to see anything. If you can’t resist the urge to come out and you make it through traffic, respect the coastside residents and the surrounding areas. Maverick’s is located smack dab in the center of a very eco sensitive area. Use common sense, stay on the trails and pack out all your trash and if you see any on the ground pack that out as well.”

The surfers will be in top form to tackle the large waves forecasted. Stormsurf.com is showing the swell to be between 15-18ft on the buoys, which can mean up to 60 ft faces.

Jeff Clark said a lot of the boys were headed up to Nelscott in Oregon for their third annual big wave contest put have turned around with the news of the contest being on.

Richard Hallman

Nelscott was a success last year, but I didn’t hear whether or not it was definitely on this weekend or if they were just headed there to warm up in hopes it could be on. The site hasn’t been updated in a while. Hopefully they can postpone any planned event as I think Mavericks takes precedence.

Stay tuned for what is sure to be big wave riding in Northern California at its best.

Jordy Smith Wins the Santa Cruz Cold Water Classic

Jordy Tearing a New One

19 year old Wildcard hailing from South Africa takes home the prestigious title and joins the rankings of some of the Surfing World’s best. In one of the most exciting spectator surf events, second only to maybe the Pipe Masters for proximity to the action, Jordy Smith shows the pack of very talented surfers what is to come. Check out this video I pulled from YouTube to see him in action.

On the winning wave Jordy matched the highest score ever in one of the longest running contests in Northern California scoring a 9.5 out of 10. Currently the ASP World Junior Champion, we can expect some good things from this powerhouse in the coming years.

Cold Water Classic 2007

2006 Cold Water Classic

Well the 4 Star WQS event is back in Santa Cruz this week and continuing through Sunday. I was there watching last year and saw Timmy Reyes ripping it up before his injury and saw all the local boys putting on a good show. This year should be pretty exciting too.

Round one on Tuesday started out small, but yesterday filled in with some solid 4-6ft pulse. The swell is expected to hang around over the next few days which should make for an exciting run on the 75k purse and bonuses on hand…including a new Jeep.

Check out the Live Webcast at the official site or Wavewatch.com.

The Race is On!!

Mundaka Spain

It’s a very exciting title race with Mick Fanning still holding the pole position and Slater gunning for a ninth world title. Taj could certainly upset it all and come through for his first world title. It’s going to be very exciting from here on out. The Mundaka pro has been postponed due to lack of surf, but we all know that place can go off.

Check out the now classic video footage from Redney Rude’s trip to the Basque Coast many years ago to see how serious this place can get.

According to the www.ASPWorldTour.com site, If Fanning wins the Billabong Pro Mundaka, Slater and Burrow need to post equal 3rd or better results to keep their world title hopes alive. Should Fanning win the event, with Burrow and Slater failing to earn Semifinal berths, Fanning will win his maiden World Title.

• If Fanning finishes 2nd, Burrow needs a 9th, Slater a 5th and Joel Parkinson and Irons a 1st for the race to continue to Brazil and beyond.

• If Fanning finishes 3rd or less, the race will continue as Burrow and Slater only need 33rds. Parkinson and Irons would need a 2nd and 3rd respectively to remain in contention.

• If Fanning finishes 5th, Parkinson needs a 3rd and Irons a 5th. Slater and Burrow remain in contention.

• If Fanning finishes 9th, Parkinson needs a 33rd and Andy a 9th. Slater and Burrow remain in contention.

• If Fanning gets a 17th, both Parkinson and Irons are off to Brazil with a chance. Slater and Burrow remain in contention.

Mavericks 2007 Surf Contest

The holding period for the 2007 Mavericks Big Wave Contest has officially ended. This winter didn’t deliver the way we had hoped with El Nino slated to amplify swell…instead it fizzled with only a few good days to speak of…mostly in December. Jeff Clark had to make the call but is hoping to close out the waiting period with some festivities that are yet to be announced.  Having a year without the giant waves of Maverick’s will only serve to make one appreciate those days when it all comes together just right.
